Biggleswade United are welcoming former next door neighbours Biggleswade Town to Second Meadow on Saturday, July 19 to celebrate United defender Martin Russell’s tenth year as a United player.

‘Marv’, a firefighter with Hertfordshire Fire Service, made his debut for United on Saturday, August 21, 2004 and started with a bang as United hit Amersham Town for eight without reply in the season opener.

He has gone on to feature in an unprecedented 336 games for United and although not a prolific goal scorer (33 in total) he has been at the heart of the side’s back line in many successful campaigns including two Beds Senior Cup finals, Hunts Premier Cup final and League Cup wins.

United are hoping that many of Marv’s former team mates can make the day a special one.

The club is laying on a barbecue after the match and United Under 8s are featuring as mascots.

Biggleswade United secretary Tracey James said: “We are hoping that the Waders and United supporters turn up in force to celebrate this unique achievement of ten years of loyalty to the one club.

“During that time he has served under management teams led by Snowy Wright, Nick Burton, Dave Elkin, Phil Childs and current manager Mick Reardon.

“Highly respected by all of his managers and team mates he will undoubtedly go down as one of United’s club legends.”

Admission is just £3 with all proceeds going to Marv’s chosen charity. Kick off is at 3pm.

>> Biggleswade United follow this match with friendlies at home to Haverhill Rovers on Tuesday and Stanway Rovers next Saturday, while Biggleswade Town will host Farnborough next Saturday.
