It may be mid-summer but the football returns

The European championships may not have finished yet but local sides begin their pre-season fixtures this weekend.

Biggleswade Town kick off their programme of friendlies tonight (Friday, July 8) with a visit to Yaxley.

Waders manager Chris Nunn this week confirmed that Gavin Hoyte will be staying at the club this season. However Max York has left to play for Histon.

Nunn has also signed Joel Ives who played for Town’s successful U18s side last season.

Waders’ first home pre-season match is on Saturday, July 16 against National League South outfit Wealdstone, who they took to a replay in last year’s FA Cup,

Biggleswade United also play tonight (Friday), at Linton against Haverhill Rovers. They then visit Cogenhoe next Saturday, July 16.

Southern League Division One Central outfit Arlesey open their pre-season campaign with a home fixture against a Stevenage XI on Saturday, July 9, kick off 3pm.

This is followed by a home fixture against National League South side Hemel Hempstead on Thursday, July 14 at 7.45pm.

That game could see them come up against their former striker Jonny McNamara.

He left the Blues a year ago to play for Hitchin Town. He finished top scorer at Top Field last campaign and this success promoted a move up a league to play for Hemel.

Potton United travel to nearby Steeple Morden on Saturday and then welcome Peterborough Sports at home on Tuesday, July 12.

Stotfold’s pre-season begins at Buntingford Town on Saturday, July 16.

The traditional pre-season friendly between Stotfold and Arlesey is at Roker Park on Tuesday, August 2.
