Potton brought down to earth by Irchester defeat

Potton United were brought down to earth with a bump with a 3-1 defeat at home to Irchester United in the UCL Division One on Tuesday.

Potton must be rueing their missed chances – they had 15 shots at goal, none of which seriously troubled the keeper – and then poor defensive play allowed a hard-working Irchester to score three goals.

From the start the home side attacked and Gary Ansell-Carter saw his shot well saved by Dale Hamilton.

At the other end Aaron Loney did well to punch away a dangerous centre. Then Daniel Webb saw his centre headed away for a Potton corner.

Matty Kneelyside saw his volley go over the bar and Calum Forster did well to prevent Dave Miles having a shot.

In the seventh minute Irchester were awarded a corner that went straight through Potton’s defence and fell to Nathan Heycock who fired past Loney.

Potton were playing some neat football and Webb passed to Jack Weeden who shot weakly when well placed. Another good move saw Georg Kiely shoot straight at the keeper and then Webb headed weakly from six yards from a centre by Weeden.

An Irchester defender was adjudged to have handled the ball just outside the penalty area, with Potton’s players appealing for a penalty, but Webb’s kick sailed well over the bar.

In the 37th minute a good passing movement saw Weeden put through and his low shot went into the net for the equaliser.

Foster then had a shot from 35 yards that Hamilton saved at full length.

However in the 43rd minute some poor defending and passing allowed Ty Clark in to restore Irchester’s lead. Ty Clark had the chance to increase the lead just before the interval but Loney saved well.

Soon after the interval Clark shot over when well placed and at the other end Luke Harradine headed wide from a corner.

Now it was Potton dominating play with Weeden forcing a corner, Aiden Mclean shooting inches over the bar and a good passing movement between Gary Ansell-Carter and Webb finishing with Weeden shooting straight at the keeper.

Webb then played Gary Ansell-Carter through but his shot was straight at the keeper. Ansell-Carter battled his way through three tackles and saw his low shot saved by Hamilton just inside the near post.

Webb had his shot saved and Weeden shot straight at the keeper.

In the 83rd minute Irchester were awarded a free kick that they took quickly catching the Potton defence out and Clark shot home for his second goal.

In the closing minutes Gary Ansell-Carter shot wide of the post. Five minutes of added time were played but Potton could not find a way back.

Potton United: Aaron Loney, Calum Forster, Shaun Slack, Shaun Faulkner, Luke Harradine, Chris Reeves (Mark Ansell-Carter), Daniel Webb, Aiden McClean (James Meredith), Gary Ansell-Carter, Jack Weeden, George Kiely (Matt Chapman).
