Lashings of fun
Top cricket players visit county
Eleven members of cricket's 'royalty' were in east Beds this week when Cople Argus received a visit from the Test Match stars who make up the Lashings World XI.
They faced the home side in a 35 overs contest at Grange Lane Playing Fields on Thursday and their New Zealander captain Chris Harris was impressed with what he saw.
"I wondered where the ground was as we drove into the village but the wicket certainly looks like being one of the best we've ever played on," he said.
West Indies captain Richie Richardson who, like his Zimbabwean teammate Henry Olonga, was carrying a leg injury, also complimented the Cople club on its facilities.
"I've played at hundreds of grounds and this is a credit to Cople," he said.
He was the first world class star to join the Lashings team and since then dozens of top names have signed up to wear the famous black and gold strip.
Also in the side to play Cople Argus were Australia's double century star Jason 'Dizzy' Gillespie, Matt Ealham (Kent and England), New Zealand batsmens Lou Vincent and James Marshall, Pakistani spinner Saqlain Mushtaq and his medium pacer partner Mohammad Akram.
Also playing were Indian Test opener Wassim Jaffer and Bangladesh's batman Mohammad Ashraful.
Lashings World XI has raised many thousands of pounds for charity and worthwhile causes including the African-Caribbean Leukaemia Trust, Cystic Fibrosis, MENCAP and Our Forgotten Children.
