The trophy was presented by Sir Malcolm Stewart, one of the founders of the golf club, in 1948. The competition is a mixed Foursomes stableford event being played on the John O’Gaunt course with 32 pairs participating this year.

The early players had the best of the weather but heavy showers during the afternoon caused play to be suspended with a few pairs still to complete their round.

Eventually the weather improved and a few hardy pairs returned to complete their round, but they were not able to remove the clubhouse leaders.

After a meal the ceremonial red rose as a ‘pepper corn rent’ payment was made by Richard Aubigne, Club Captain to Richard Bushell, President.

Rosemary Kimber and Graham Court, Carolyn Lewis and Phil White, who returned after the storm along with Ros Kensall and Peter Grimes, came in with 30 points. There were two pairs on 32 points and the winners were determined by count back on the front nine holes.

The winners were Adrienne Massey and Gerry Gentle followed by Gill Smith and Harry Wakefield.

The summer celebrations continued at 5am on Sunday with 33 members playing for the Mid Summer Madness Trophy on the John O’Gaunt course. The early morning silence was disturbed by the shotgun start and concluded with a full English breakfast, with player regaling tales of their rounds.

Result: 1 Matthew Gudgin 38 points, 2 Barry Watson 37 points, 3 Chris Collin 35 points.

The June monthly medal attracted a large field of 146 players competing over the Carthagena course on Saturday. The scores reflected good playing conditions with four players all scoring 67 nett with Graham Anderson prevailing on count back.
