Potton book place in county cup final
Wins for United but Rokermen and Reds both lose
Having beaten AFC Kempston Rovers 3-0 in the Christmas derby at Hillgrounds, Potton United made it a double to book their place in the final of the Beds Senior Trophy this afternoon thanks to somewhat fortunate 1-0 win at The Hollow.
Outplayed for much of the 90 minutes, Potton rode their luck but Adam Furness ended the stalemate on 56 minutes. He side-stepped a challenge following good work between Graham Tibbals and Tom Galvin and stroked the ball past Kempston keeper Ross Patterson from just inside the area.
At the final whistle Kempton felt cheated by the result after having had the lion's share of possession and the better of the chances. But in football things don't always go according to form and while United knew they had been under the cosh, it's results that count and a county cup final against Crawley Green - who put out AFC Dunstable 3-1 at Barton – is their reward for repelling the visitors.
This coming Wednesday United are at Weston Park when they hope to finally play Wootton Blue Cross in the North Beds Charity Cup as the first round tie has already been postponed three times due to a waterlogged pitch. Then next Saturday they are in league action away to Irchester Town while the following Tuesday sees them hosting Huntingdon Town back at The Hollow.
Following their goalless draw last weekend against St Ives Town, Stotfold were hoping to pick up all three points when they hosted Deeping Rangers this afternoon at Roker Park in one of only four United Counties Premier games to beat the snow which fell to the north of the county and wiped out all the games involving Northamptonshire clubs.
But it was not to be as they went down 3-1 to the third in the table visitors. Leon Gutzmore gave the home side a fourth minute lead but Bettison on 28 minute, Stevens in the 44th and Griffiths on the hour did the damage.
This Tuesday Stotfold are due to host Sleaford Town while next Saturday they entertain Boston Town.
Langford were worthy of a point when they hosted Harefield United at Forde Park this afternoon but the visitors substitute Wayne Gladdy robbed them of that with a 74th minute winner after Lee Harman had cancelled out Danny Buckle's first half opener.
There was better Spartan South Midlands League news at Second Meadow where Biggleswade United picked up all three points thanks to a stoppage time winner against Hillingdon Borough.
Romero Pinto gave the visitors the lead with a solid volley but Bilal Hassan levelled on the half hour after his penalty kick was pushed back to him by the Borough keeper.
And it Martin 'Marv' Russell who headed home the winner in the 91st minute after an Andre Maltay corner had been headed back across the area by Marc Holmes.
This coming Tuesday United host Langford in the North Beds Charity Cup while on Saturday they visit Kingsbury London Tigers. Then the following Tuesday they entertain Kent Town back at Second Meadow.
The Reds are at home to Premier Division basement boys Aylesbury next Saturday.
Arlesey Town went down 1-0 at home to Burnham in the Zamaretto Southern League with Sear getting that all-important goal 14 minutes from time in a game watched by 127 spectators.
But it was better news for Biggleswade Town when they visited basement side Aylesbury United as the Waders ran out 3-1 winners.
James Freshwater gave the visitors an early third minute lead while Brett Donnelly added a second in the 25th. And while Aylesbury's Montgomery pulled it back to 2-1 in the 39th minute, Bobby Dance made the points safe 15 minutes from time.
