PREVIEW: London Welsh v Bedford Blues

Blues gear up for London trip after narrow Bristol defeat

Bedford Blues face a tough task if they are to return to winning ways.

The Blues make the trip to the capital to face London Welsh this weekend and director of rugby Mike Rayer is expecting nothing less than a difficult 80 minutes.

He said: "It could be a really exciting game between two sides who are wanting to play rugby this year.

"I've watched them and they play with quite a bit of width, orchestrated by their number 10, Gordon Ross, who is an international rugby player, and they also have a big, physical pack.

"It's going to be a similar, if not bigger, challenge than last week because we're on the road."

Welsh, after defeats in their opening two Championship outings, have bounced back with victories against Birmingham & Solihull and away at Rotherham, but Rayer's side will approach the game in good spirits.

Rayer, whose side are yet to concede a try, said: "There's a lot of pride in the group, they want to play for each other and want to keep that record going and keep that try line intact.

"From a coaching point of view we probably didn't quite get our tactics right in the first half against Bristol when we kicked too much for the corners.

"We should've tried to keep the ball in hand because their lineout was very efficient.

"Second half we were outstanding. We tried to play with a bit of tempo and a bit of pace and it was very good. There were a couple of mistakes, but the way we play the game that is going to happen."

On Saturday, the only definite absentee, apart from those with relatively long-term injuries, is Brendan Burke.

He hobbled out of the Bristol clash with damaged knee ligaments and is expected to be out of action for a few weeks.
