RUGBY: Blues Seal deal with prop Dan
Bedford Blues have strengthened their front row options with the signing of Birmingham & Solihull prop Dan Seal.
Seal, who moved to the second city from Cornish Pirates in the summer, put pen to paper at Goldington Road on Tuesday.
And director of rugby Mike Rayer believes he will be a decent addition to the Blues' ranks, saying: "We got his CV a few weeks ago and while loan players are worthwhile, you can't always be sure when they are going to be here.
"He has plenty of experience at this level and knows his way around. There are plenty of young players here and he can help them out."
In addition to bolstering the front row, which has been decimated by injuries to Marco Cecere and Mike Guess, Rayer reckons that Seal will provide an injection of enthusiasm to the squad.
He added: "We were able to do scrummage training last night (Tuesday) and everyone trained well.
"A new signing provides some competition and wants to impress and that is something that could do us some good."
Seal was missing from the Bees line-up that was on the receiving end of a 53-25 defeat on Saturday, a result that ended a two-game losing run and put the Blues back on track.
And Rayer was relatively pleased with what he saw, saying: "We started with good intention and some of our play in the first half was excellent.
"We had eight changes and were a bit disjointed, but I got the response I wanted.
"There were four ex-colts out there, a few players got some game time and we deserved to win."
Moving on to this weekend, Rayer believes that the Blues' main concern should be the threat of a backlash from opponents Rotherham.
The Yorkshiremen were hammered 46-0 at Nottingham last time out, a result that shouldn't lead to any complacency.
Rayer said: "I still think it's a difficult place to go. They're a proud bunch up there who know what playing for Rotherham is all about.
"They'll be hurting from last week and the crowd will be on top of us. It's a narrow pitch and we might have to change our game plan, but we'll go there positively and try to grind a result out."
Sacha Harding will miss the trip, and the next few weeks, after suffering a broken arm. Ben Lewitt is a doubt due to illness and Nick Walshe is a week away from a return.
