RUGBY: Neil Roy's verdict on Blues' 53-25 win over Birmingham & Solihull

Ian Davey was the pin up boy in an 11-try exhibition of champagne rugby on Ladies Day at Goldington Road.

The Blues winger touched down four times in the match to get into the try scoring charts for the first time this season after dominating it for most of last.

And Luke Fielden, who got two of Bedford's eight, shot to the top of the table with his fifth in the Championship.

Davey was used as one of the models for the poster as the Blues promoted their match in pink strips to support Breast Cancer charities. He was desperate to get on the scoresheet.

Like the Michael Owens of the world he wants to be regarded as a finisher. And his record of 15 tries from 20 starts last season shows he has pedigree.

There was added pressure on him, too, as the player now sponsored by the local lingerie firm that backed Billy Twelvetrees last year. And Billy was in the crowd at the ground before his heroics for Leicester on Sunday.

"It's been killing me not scoring" Davey said, "especially as we've been given a licence to throw it about. It's a team game but everyone wants to score tries. I was so relieved."

Of course he couldn't have chosen a better match to get off the mark – not just the great occasion but one against the league's bottom team who face a winding up order unless they pay the Inland Revenue more than 90,000 next week.

Their best players are being cherrypicked by all and sundry and the word is that their supporters had to pay for the team coach to get them to the ground.

Nothing, however, concentrates the mind like an imminent execution and they certainly fronted up with three tries in the game themselves – one when Paul Tupai was in the sin bin in the first half and two in the second when the game turned into one of touch rugby and no tackling.

Having zero tries against for four games, the Blues have now conceded six in two.
