RUGBY: Neil Roy's verdict on Blues' 28-17 defeat at London Welsh

This was a serious reality check for anyone who thought the Blues were in for a stroll in the park through rugby's new Championship.

On this evidence it won't be – however good that result against Bristol looks when everything's totted up.

To be fair the noises coming out of Goldington Road have all been about not getting too carried away after an excellent start.

But Bedford's bubble was well and truly burst next to the great Pagoda at Kew Gardens.

It was difficult to remember the last time the Blues had lost at The Old Deer Park. But it was way back when Colin Jackson and co were trying build a team after the traumas of the previous regime.

It was a shock to the system all right and the Blues will have plenty to ponder when they think about how to put it right next time. The way the new season is structured they could find themselves facing London Welsh in three more games before the end of April.

Read Neil's full report only in Thursday's Times & Citizen.

Bedford Blues: Walsh (Lilley), Richmond (Locke), Boulton, Tupae, Rae, Harding, Lewitt, Goodman (Harlock), Chudley (Veenendaal), Dorrian, Fielden, Vass (Davies), Roberts, Dodge, Pritchard (Davey).

T&C MOM: Luke Fielden – route one.
