Saturday football: Waders romp to win, Arlesey draw
Biggleswade Town rekindled their early season form with victory over Beaconsfield on Saturday - while Arlesey were held to a draw.
Following two tough midweek training sessions the Waders were back firing on all cylinders as they ripped Beaconsfield SYCOB to shreds in the opening 27 minutes of their Southern League Central Division clash at the Carlsberg Stadium.
The Waders went 3-0 up against the third placed Rams - whom they drew 0-0 with earlier in the campaign - although Ashley Fuller’s opener on 13 minutes did have a huge slice of luck attached to it when his 30 yard cross from the left touchline flew into the far corner of the Beaconsfield net.
The second on 17 minutes followed a corner from the right, the ball clearly handled by a Beaconsfield player allowing Stuart Lochhead to score from the penalty spot.
Tremendous play by man of the match Alex O’Brien set up Brett Donnelly for a 27th minute tap-in and while Beaconsfield’s Ryan Upward did hit the Wader’s bar on 28 minutes, five minutes into the second half the visitors were down to ten men when a raised elbow by Yiadom Yeboag against Brett Dinnelly earned him an instant red card.
Paul Barnes made it 4-0 on 69 minutes when he finished off another brilliant sweeping Biggleswade move while the visiting keeper somehow managed to keep out at least six other glorious chances, the Waders also hitting the woodwork on three occasions.
The win keeps the Town in the play-offs in fifth spot although they are 14 points behind leaders Slough Town and three behind third placed Beaconsfield.
In the Southern League’s Premier Division, fourth from bottom Arlesey Town picked up a point from a 1-1 draw at home to St Albans City whose equaliser came right on the stoke of full time.
New dad Drewe Broughton opened the Blues’ account and the 246 Hitchin Road spectators thought it was going to be enough until City’s Newton popped up to snatch a share of the points at the death.
In the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands League, relegation theatened Biggleswade United went down 2-1 at home to Leverstock Green while midtable Stotold earned a point from a 2-2 draw at Oxhey Jets.
Meanwhile at Forde Park in SSML Division One, Langford lost 4-2 against Welwyn Garden City who opened their account after just five minutes through Dave Kiddie. And a minute later Jonathan Walsh added the second while Ade Osobu made it 3-0 after 35.
The Reds player-boss Wes Byrne pulled one back on 38 minutes and it was game on at 3-2 after 65 minutes when Rob Russell score Langford’s second. But when James Davis scored again for the visitors on 74 minutes, that was it.
And finally to Home Close (formerly Cecil Street) where Potton United thrashed their troubled UCL Division One hosts Rothwell Town 6-3.
It was one-way traffic for much of the match as United dominated against their bottom of the table hosts. Graham Tibbals netted a hat-trick while James Worboys, Jamie Steele and Simon Pearce were also on target for Potton against Bones replies from Luke (two, one from the penalty spot) and Gilks.
