Review - Avenue Q at Milton Keynes Theatre

Sex, nudity and puppets are all the ingredients for a show designed just for adults.

Avenue Q at Milton Keynes Theatre sees a young man Princeton fresh out of college move into the area and looking for his purpose.

Your first reaction to Avenue Q is one of hysteria as the musical numbers come across as genuinely funny. There were plenty of chuckles throughout You’re A Little Bit Racist and The Internet is for Porn.

This is a show that probably won’t be for everyone and people’s memories of sweet innocent childhood shows like Sesame Street is likely to be destroyed.

But the second reaction to the show is one of admiration for the puppeteers. Not only do they have to act, but sing, dance and lip-sync but in the case of some of the performers, having to double up as well.

In among the laughs and the hilarity of the songs, there is several more melancholic moments in the show about the struggles of growing up, about becoming an adult after being a teenager.

It’s something that many people can relate to and gives the show a real heart.

This gives it a real feel good feeling and will leave you going home happy and singing. Probably best that you don’t sing Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist in public though.

Avenue Q can be seen until Saturday May 21. For tickets, call the box office on 0844 871 7652 or visit www.atgtickets.co.uk/miltonkeynes.
