Uni English department climbs national rankings

UNIVERSITY chiefs are talking the language of success, after the English department climbed 59 places in the latest Guardian University Guide.

Each year the newspaper assess departments across more than 100 universities across the UK.

And after being ranked 102nd out of 106 English departments last year, the 2013 guide puts Bedfordshire at 43nd.

Professor Helen Bailey, head of performing arts and English, said: “We increased the number of staff and ensured they were more research- focused. Both existing and new staff channelled extra time to the support of students.

“For example, with every piece of work that was assessed we combined the feedback with one to one tutorials.

“That is considerable support that students were being provided, and it really worked – it resulted in a higher proportion of students gaining firsts.”

Overall the guide described the university as: “A vibrant, forward-thinking university with a diverse population of 23,000 students.”
