REVIEW: There’s something fishy going on in Woburn

Treating my dining partner to dinner at a fish restaurant when they don’t like fish could so easily have backfired.

For the whole car journey I heard uncertain noises about how the non-fish-related food might still taste fishy, how the restaurant would smell like the sea, and other such worries.

But aha! How wrong he was.

As we took out seats at Loch Fyne in Woburn both of us realised that we really were in for a treat.

Far from a fishy smell, the restaurant is bright and airy and our window seat provided us with the perfect opportunity for a spot of early evening people watching.

The friendly staff brought over the specials board, and my non-fish-loving friend had plenty to choose from.

Loch Fyne defines itself by exemplary fish dishes and this was all too clear when my food arrived. I enjoyed a delicious tempura squid starter, then for the main course I was served an inviting fish platter, which, especially as Woburn is so far from the sea, tasted every bit as fresh as from a seaside eaterie.

The meat was great too, and the charcuterie platter starter went down a storm with my sceptical friend. But the burger, complete with the thickest bacon strips either of us had ever seen, was given a glowing review as ‘one of the best I’ve ever tasted’.

Dessert was also a tour de force. I had creme brulee with shortbread to die for, while my pal wolfed down a slice of banoffee pie which was that evening’s special.

I would recommend Loch Fyne to anyone, even if you don’t like fish there is something to enjoy. And enjoy it we did!
