Academy does the double in technology tournament

The four from year 13, Cameron Burgess, Hettie Rogers, Emilia de Luca and Aaron Robertson, won the ‘Advanced’ category.

The tournament involves teams of students who are interested in engineering and science competing in a one day event to devise and build a solution to an unseen technical task, which are then tested and judged against competing teams.

The Rotary Technology Tournament, which has been accredited by the British Science Association to the CREST Discovery Awards, is one of a number of competitions that is run by the Rotary Club of Great Britain and Ireland.

The academy entered teams at all levels across Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced, with the challenge to solve a design and technology based task which they know nothing about until the day of the event.

The tournament is judged by Rotarians and guests with backgrounds in engineering, technology and design and each team’s solution as a working model is competitively tested and assessed by the team of judges.

The academy’s CEIAG, STEM and Apprentice Co-ordinator, Debbie Hill, said:

“The Technology Tournament is an excellent opportunity for our design and engineering students to come together as teams to plan, analyse design problems and their constraints and develop a solution to the challenge set. This encompasses the many skills that are needed in the world of work – teamwork, communication, presentation, problem solving.”
