Burst main stops water for the day

HOUSEHOLDS in four villages were left without water for a day after a pipe burst.

On Tuesday (September 27) an eight inch water main burst on Grange Lane, just outside Cople.

Residents called Anglian Water at 5.30am.

The villages of Cople, Willington, Cardington and Shortstown were all affected. Some houses lost their water entirely while other homes were left with low water pressure.

The problem remained for the majority of the day as repair work was carried out.

A spokesman for Anglian Water, the company which is responsible for the delivery of water in this area, said: “The main was under the village but we needed to be very close to, if not in the road, to make a repair

“The main was on a double ‘S’ bend in the road so it proved very dangerous.

“It led to some delay because we had to order some temporary traffic lights so our workers weren’t run over.

“It was quite a deep pipe at 1.5m or more underground. They had to dig out 2m.”

The repair work was completed by approximately 3.45pm after which the job of recharging the mains and gradually building up the water pressure was started.

A normal service was resumed in all of the homes by 5pm.

Anglian Water apologised for the problem. The spokesman said: “We know it is extremely inconvenient to be without water and we do our best to get things fixed when they do go wrong. Thank you for your patience.”
