Campsite not a concern for gas specialist

A CAMPSITE would be a safe use for a former landfill site according to an expert.

A planning application is due to be submitted for the old quarry and landfill on Carthagena Road in Potton.

Landfill gas specialist, John Keenlyside, and David Barry, a contaminated land specialist, are assessing the site for Greensands Camp.

John said that other closed landfill sites have been used for recreational purposes.

He said: “Although Potton Landfill accepted landfill gas producing domestic waste in the 1990s gas production is known to decline markedly after 15 years.

“Monitoring of the landfill indicates that significant concentrations of methane gas are present at depth but the near surface cap and cover soils do not contain gas concentrations likely to pose significant risks. The site is heavily vegetated with many semi mature trees.

Plants cannot grow if landfill gas affects the near surface soils and root zones.”

Long term monitoring of the gas would be instigated.
