Community mourns much-loved GP Shiv

A fundraising campaign in memory of a much-loved Shefford GP has reached nearly £10,000 in less than a week.

Dr Shiv Sekaran died on Saturday after developing sepsis.

The 48-year-old practised at Dr Cakebread and Partners.

Well-respected by patients and GPs alike, Dr Sekaran was known as ‘a GP who never left his hat at work’.

He studied medicine in Madras, India and after a career as an anaesthetist, joined Dr Cakebread and Partners in Shefford where he practised for 14 years.

He died in hospital in the early hours of Saturday after developing sepsis, a life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infection injures its own tissues and organs.

In a tribute to his colleague, Dr William Hollington, Ivel Valley Locality Chair for Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group, said:“I am devastated to hear of the tragic death of Dr Shiv Sekaran at the weekend.

“Shiv was well regarded and respected by patients and colleagues alike.

“He showed great commitment to our local system by working both at his practice and for our local Out Of Hours service, M-Doc.

“In addition, he had leadership roles in both, being a Partner at his practice and a director of M-Doc. The strength of feeling shown in the comments left on the practice Facebook site are a testament to the kind of doctor that he was.

“We have lost a competent, caring and compassionate colleague.

“My heart goes out to Shiv’s family at this terrible time, and I also offer my condolences to staff at Dr Cakebread and Partners and M-Doc for their loss.”

His funeral is to take place on Monday, April 3 is for family, colleagues and invited guests, but a memorial service to celebrate his life with be held later in the year for the wider community.

The surgery will be closed between 8am and 3pm on April 3 with emergency cover only during that time.

A book of condolence has been opened at Shefford Health Centre and Dr Sekaran’s family have set up a JustGiving page to raise money and awareness for Sepsis Trust UK in his memory: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/drshivsekaran
