A spokesman for production company Endemol said: “All over the country, there are spectacular historic properties at risk of being lost forever.

“These buildings are part of our identity, keepers of our past. Without brave new owners it’s not only bricks and mortar that would be lost, but their fascinating stories too.

“We would like to find a wide range of owners of derelict, historic properties who plan to transform them into their dream homes. Whether Idyllic ruinous gems in the countryside, inner-city industrial buildings, mills, architectural gems or just quirky projects – we want to hear from you.

“We would like to follow the restoration process, bringing to light the difficult decisions that have to be faced about what should be saved and what sacrificed to make way for a 21st century home. How tough is it to balance a sympathy for the past with the needs of modern day living?

“Our social historian will look into who has lived in the building, what happened there, who built it and why? Meanwhile, our architectural historian will investigate how the structure fits into the wider context of British architecture.

“At the end of it all, we hope to see an important historical property saved from dereliction and brought back to life as a wonderful home.
