Kelly Smith, 37, of Reynolds Court, Biggleswade, was jailed after repeatedly stealing from shops in and around the town between May 23 and June 14.

Smith stole goods ranging from air fresheners, perfumes and other household items, to alcohol and a large quantity of food.

When challenged by employees of Aldi supermarket in Bonds Lane, Biggleswade on June 2, Smith became aggressive and made all attempts to evade them, including biting one of them on the hand.

On Wednesday, June 17, Smith pleaded guilty at Luton Crown Court, where she was sentenced to over six months' imprisonment for ten counts of theft, one count of attempted theft and one count of assault.

PC Aiden Howarth, from the Central Community team, said: “Our team is dedicated to keeping our residents and local business owners safe.

“Smith has not only repeatedly stolen from local shops and supermarkets she has targeted these stores during a challenging time with no regard for the safety of the stores’ employees or customers.

"We are satisfied with the court’s decision to impose a custodial sentence and hope Smith will spend the time reconsidering her life choices.

“We are continuing to ask our residents to report any concerns about issues in the area as we treat each report seriously and work hard to ensure we tackle those issues that cause most impact to our communities.”
