An animal lover from Biggleswade yesterday spoke out about her suspicions that someone was poisoning cats in the area.
Maxine Jordan, 61, lost her elderly cat Alfred after he came staggering home through the cat flap one night in August.
Mrs Jordan, of Dell’s Lane, said: “He went blind, was fitting and 24 hours later he died.
“The vet said he had a massive brain seizure, but there was no toxicology report at the time.”
Mrs Jordan thought her cat’s sudden death was strange, but after speaking to neighbours became concerned there may have been foul play.
A woman in Oakwood Crescent claimed her three cats were poisoned in June, after they were found dead in the garden. And after Mrs Jordan shared the news on the RSPCA East Herts Facebook page, she was surprised to learn of other suspected poisonings in Sandy and Arlesey, and another in Dell’s Lane.
She said: “ As an animal lover anyway, I’m absolutely gutted. It’s appalling. If someone is deliberately poisoning these cats, it’s some sicko. It just seems to be a spate of them.”
An RSPCA spokesman said: “We are very concerned to hear about these cats who died of suspected poisoning.
“Poisoning causes a lot of pain and distress and is often fatal. It is likely the cats suffered a lot before they died.
“We would urge people to be careful when using poisonous substances – to clear up any spills and to store and discard them safely.
“There is also the worrying possibility that someone did this deliberately so if anyone has seen anything suspicious please contact us on 0300 123 8018.”
