Following a series of thefts in the county, police officers are urging members of the public to be vigilant when withdrawing cash from ATM machines.

Members of the public have reported their bank card getting trapped in cash machines; offenders are then retrieving the cards and using them to make large purchases.

Detective Constable Ruth Honegan, from the force's Crime Investigation Team, said: “It is hard to spot these traps, so it’s important that members of the public act swiftly. If your card gets stuck and the machine does not tell you that your card has been retained by the bank, please call your bank immediately and cancel your card.

“Please remember to remain vigilant and be aware of people around you who try to engage you in conversation, and anyone who may be trying to distract you whilst you enter in your pin number.

“No-one wants to lose cash and especially during the Christmas the period.”
