Dog home’s plea to residents

BATTERSEA Dogs and Cats Home is asking for Chronicle Country residents’ help in tracing the life of its founder.

Mary Tealby, who started the home back in 1860 is buried in the graveyard at St Andrew’s Church in Biggleswade.

This week work was undertaken to maintain Mary’s grave and the charity is asking anyone who may know more about her to get in touch.

Battersea chief executive Claire Horton said: “Mary Tealby’s legacy has helped improve the lives of animals all over the world and by restoring her grave we will ensure a lasting memorial to this remarkable woman. Sadly very little is known about Mary.”

The appeal comes as Rodney Bale and Cassie Crick from Cliveden Conservation complete work on the restoration of the grave, which has included replacing letters and parts of stone.
