A couple from Everton have returned home from dragon boat European championships with silver and bronze medals.
Phil Durham, aged 44, and his wife Sarah, aged 35, have been members of the St Neots Dragon Boat team for just a year and travelled with the GB team to Rome for the competitions.
Sarah, an IT systems analyst, won two silver and one bronze in the standard boat senior A women’s classes.
Phil, who works for Frontier Agriculture in Sandy as an IT analyst, won his bronze in a standard boat senior A mixed class.
The couple said: “A truly inspirational week. As a whole squad we pushed ourselves to places unimaginable both physically and mentally. We won medals but what we also won is something that will stay with us for the rest of our lives and that is a sense of pride and achievement, knowing we pushed ourselves to our limits representing our country in a sport we love.”
The couple will be attending the British Dragon Boat Racing (BDA) National Cup Finals in Nottingham in September and then go in training for the World Championships being held next year in China.
A spokeswoman for St Neots Dragon Boat team said: “We are thrilled all their hard work paid off with medals in the European Dragon Boat Championships. They joined us only a year ago and look what they have achieved.
“We are immensely proud of Phil and Sarah’s commitment to training, their dedication and drive but above all they have inspired all team members within SNDBT. We are 100% behind them and with them every step for their next challenge, the World Championships in China in 2017, as we are all our members that are trialling for selection for Team GB.”
