Full steam ahead in Stotfold!

PLOUGHING demonstrations were at the heart of a working steam weekend.

Heavy horses, steam engines and antique tractors all ploughed the fields at Stotfold Watermill on Saturday and Sunday (October 8 and 9).

The steam powered threshing machine was also popular with the visitors, who numbered more than 4,000.

Traditional crafts such as barrel making were shown alongside the more modern skills of chainsaw carvers.

Fresh apple juice was produced on the day using an antique apple scratter mill.

The mill machinery was running on both days, producing stone ground flour that visitors were then able to buy.

John Saunders, chair of the trustees of the mill and nature reserve, said: “This weekend provided a unique insight into farming history as it brings together many rare examples of steam driven machinery and we are delighted that so many visitors enjoyed this amazing spectacle.”

Stotfold Watermill is open on alternate Sundays from 12.30pm to 5pm until Sunday, November 6.
