Grant helps village judo club buy new equipment

Electricity distribution company UK Power Networks gave the funds to Bushido Judo Henlow as part of its Team Sport Award programme.

It donated the money following an application from employee Adam Heley, a linesman based in Bedford, whose son and daughter both attend the club.

Adam said: “They have both been going from the day it started and we support them in any way we can. Not coming from a judo background it was all new to me, but I am so happy that my children wanted to be involved with such a fantastic club.”

The club was formed two years ago by four local judo players and they meet on a Monday night in the village hall.

Instructor Danny Anderson said: “Bushido has grown into a thriving ‘grass roots’ facility for youngsters from as young as five to our oldest member of 69. We would like to take this opportunity to thank UK Power Networks for its very kind donation which will be going towards a much needed crash mat.”

The Team Sport Award scheme is designed to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and development of sporting opportunities.

Hundreds of community and sports groups have benefited from grants since the scheme was set up. Last year £13,000 was donated to sporting groups connected to UK Power Networks staff.
