Homes not to be constructed

PLANS to build 139 homes on a brownfield site have been brought to a halt after councillors refused to grant planning permission.

Taylor Wimpey North Thames, Primes Estates and Bedsand had applied to construct the dwellings on land at the northern edge of Stotfold, south of Taylors Road. Office space would also have been included.

The site has had outline planning permission, which approves the principal of development, since 2008 and the Central Beds Council’s planning officers had recommended that the application be approved.

But council’s development management committee turned down the application on the grounds of unacceptable design and over development in a rural setting.

Stotfold Town Council also objected to the plans on several grounds including overdevelopment.

But the applicant’s agent, Marcus Lambert of PPML Consulting, asked councillors to recognise the positive benefits the proposal would bring to Stotfold. He added that the employment space within the development would only be for offices with standard working hours.

Outline application was granted previously because it was under performing as an employment site.

The site would have also included affordable housing, car parking, service roads, landscaping, a children’s play area and access.

The density of dwellings would have been 43 per hectare including flats.
