A group from the Explorer Scout Unit will be travelling to Finland for the event on July 16 until July 28.

They will be joining thousands of people at the Roihu 2016 Jamboree, an international camp for scouts and guides.

There are eight going from Potton - five explorer scouts along with three leaders - to experience the culture of the country and take part in adventurous activities.

Leader Robert Greener said: “We will spend three days in small groups with the family of a Finnish scout or guide learning about their culture. From there we will spend 10 days camping in a forest by the side of a lake, where there will be lots of adventurous activities for the explorer scouts to do.”

There will be more than 15,000 participants attending from various countries across Europe and the world, with an expected 1,000 British people attending.

The Potton group will need about £500 for each person for camp fees and flights and have already held a tombola stall at the festive lights switch on. They will run a bag pack at Tesco in early February, and are planning to hold a cubs 100th, and beavers 30th, anniversary party as a fundraiser.

Potton Explorer Scout Unit has grown from one member just three years ago, to 16 today.
