Milkman to retire after 38 years of delivering pints

Brian Carter, who lives in Biggleswade, has been doing the same round in the Langford and Stotfold areas for over 38 years.

However, after delivering over 400 gallons of milk per week to his customers, and travelling up to 500 miles per week, Brian is now looking forward to getting back into his favourite hobby – golf.

He would also like to travel and spend more time with his wife and two daughters.

He said: “Being a milkman was a job I was born to do, I love my customers, most of who I am on first name terms with, and leaving them will be very sad; they really are the best thing about the job.”

As well as delivering their milk, Brian regularly spends time with customers, something he says he will continue to do. Meanwhile, Brian’s round in Langford and Stotfold will be shared by the current milkmen at the Bedford depot and Brian has notified his customers of the changes.

A community man, Brian is looking forward to continuing to support local charity work in his retirement. He currently buys and donates products such as bottles of juice or bags of crisps to the annual Langford Fete, an event which one of his customers helps organise.

Depot Manager at Bedford, Lynda Mann said: “Brian has always been a very reliable member of the team. His customers love him and he goes above and beyond the call of duty on a daily basis. He is everything a milkman should be. We wish him all the best in his retirement.”
