When her much-loved nan lost her voicebox during a brave battle with cancer, nine-year-old Mia Brett was inspired to show her solidarity by signing up for a 12-hour sponsored silence.

Even though Christine Brett, 63, from Bedford died two days before the charity challenge took place, the little learner from Ravensden Lower School courageously carried on and raised a magnificent £422.72 for St John’s Hospice in Moggerhanger.

Her proud mum Katie said: “Mia was incredibly determined to complete this massive challenge, in spite of her Nanny passing away.

“We were astonished she still wanted to go ahead even after the sad news, I’m sure raising so much money will bring her a huge sense of achievement and also help her through her loss.”

Mia explained: “I wanted to do the silence to see what it was like for my Nanny.”
