Two serious accidents on A1 southbound Sandy to Biggleswade in less than half an hour

The first involved one car and one HGV, and the second involved a car and a motorcylist.

Two serious accidents took place along the A1 on Sunday.

On the same stretch of road - less than half an hour apart - there was a crash involving a car and an HGV followed by a collision between a car and a motorcyclist.

Two people were trapped during the first incident, whilst after the second incident, the motorcyclist had to be taken to hospital.

A Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "This was two separate RTCs in the same location - A1 Southbound Sandy Roundabout to Biggleswade North roundabout.

"The first was at 3.17pm, involving one car and one HGV. Two persons were trapped, and extricated using hydraulic cutting equipment.

"Stabilisation of air bags and small tools in use, both casualties were in the care of ambulance service.

"Crews attended from, Sandy, Shefford, Kempston, Bedford along with our Specialist Rescue Unit.

"The second was at 3.45pm, involving one car and one motorcyclist. The motorcyclist was transported to hospital via ambulance, and scene safety was implemented by the fire service and police.

"Crews attended from Kempston, Bedford and Stopsley along with our Specialist Rescue Unit."

A Bedfordshire Police spokeswoman, said: "We were originally made aware by the fire service of a collision between a car and a lorry on the A1 southbound Sandy to Biggleswade shortly before 3.20pm. Roads were closed as emergency services dealt with the incident. Two people were taken to hospital and the collision is being investigated.

"At around 3.40pm a collision occurred also on the A1 southbound between a car and a motorbike. The motorcyclist was assessed by the ambulance service for minor injuries."
