That’s the message for people in at-risk groups as the winter continues.

GP surgeries and pharmacies are offering the jabs for free to anyone aged 65 and older, pregnant women and those who suffer from a pre-existing condition.

Such conditions include diabetes, a heart problem, kidney disease, liver disease, a chest complaint or breathing difficulties.

Anyone who has had a stroke or transient ischemic attack (mini stroke), a problem with their spleen or a neurological condition is also applicable.

Children aged two and three can also be given painless nasal sprays.

Dr Helena Jopling from Central Beds Council’s public health team said: “Flu isn’t just a bad cold and for the most vulnerable members of our communities it can cause much more serious illness.

“It’s a sad fact that last year in Beds 167 people died from illnesses that started as flu.”

She added: ““The best way to avoid getting flu is to get protected, so I would urge anyone who is at risk to arrange a vaccination.

“It’s worth remembering that the flu jab doesn’t just protect you, it protects those around you too.”
