Shell discovered in Willington

THE discovery of a potentially explosive shell led to the temporary closure of a road in Willington.

A resident of Station Road contacted the police yesterday (Monday, May 2) after finding the device in his garden.

A spokesman for Bedfordshire Police said: “We got a call from a member of the public saying that they’d been digging in their garden and come up against what appeared to be a world war incendiary device.

“We did what we always do and evacuated the immediate vicinity to a safe distance. It didn’t affect that many people but it affected some.”

Station Road was closed at the junction with the A603 and the bomb disposal squad came to the scene and removed the shell.

The road was reopened at 2.39pm.
