Silver medal for Potton choir

AN all female choir has come second in a prestigious competition.

Potton based Phoenix Chorus reached this commendable place at the Sweet Adelines Regional Competition, in which they joined 24 other barbershop choirs from across the UK and The Netherlands.

The contest took place in Birmingham on Saturday (May 7).

The chorus enters annually and the singers were the overall winners back in 2007, when they went on to sing at the international convention in Hawaii.

This year they sang Lulu’s Back in Town and A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square.

Baritone singer, Caroline Donovan, said: “We were really pleased with second because it was a really high level competition.

“In the barbershop world there is a nominal number of 600 and we scored 602. Everybody was working really hard to improve on last year when we were 5th.

“The winners were from Forth Valley in Scotland. We watched them and we thought them very worthy winners.”

The group is already planning its entries for next year as the songs take a long time to get up to the required standard.

They hope to reach the top spot in 2012 as the winners will once again be invited to Hawaii.
