Private Ben Westmorland has won an army award after finishing his recruit training.
Private Westmorland, 30, from Potton, has successfully completed the Combat Infantryman’s Course at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire.
His platoon commander, Lieutenant John Snoddon, said: “Private Westmorland has won the Best Recruit award. Despite being the oldest member of the platoon, he was far and away the fittest so he also won the best at PT award.
“He is a worthy winner of both of these awards.”
Private Westmorland will receive his awards at the pass out parade ceremony at the Infantry Training Centre on December 12.
Private Westmorland said: “I’m a bit older than most recruits. A couple of years ago I began to think about a job with a career path, something that would give me a bit more out of life.
“I chose the army because I think it gives you those things and more.
“The course at Catterick has its highs and lows, but I enjoyed most of it. Getting on well with the younger lads in the platoon was important, even though they called me grandad.
“Winning these awards is great.”
