A micropub in Henlow Camp has now been open for four months and is proving a real hit with the customers.
The Old Transporter Ale House on Hitchin Road opened on September 19 replacing a Blockbusters store.
Owners June and Stephen Topham of Bedford Road are enjoying their experience of running the ale-serving venue but admit it was tough to get everyhting up and running.
June said: “We picked up the keys on July 1 and stripped everything out before refurbishing the premises ready to open in September.
“It has been really great. It’s attracting local people who can walk here AND some people have even walked from as far away as Shefford.
“People have commented on the fact they like the relaxed atmosphere and with ales, beer and wine as well as soft drinks on offer there is something for everyone.”
In contrast to a traditional pub, a micropub is a small freehouse with low overheads and maximised use of space with a focus on cask ales.
Since converting the old shop into the micropub June and Stephen have tried to give the venue a transport theme which is visible as soon as you enter with the array of pictures and transport signs on the walls.
June said: “We are trying to make it transport-related because of the title of the venue so we are looking to get even more pictures in the near future.”
June used to work in the Golden Pheasant in Biggleswade but Stephen has no previous experience in the industry.
June added: “We’re really putting our soul into the micropub and we know from the feedback it is totally worth it.”
There are about 70 registered micropubs registered in England and The Old Transporter Ale House is the first in Bedfordshire.
Running the venue has not been easy going as Stephen and June have been working up to 150 hours a week between them and have not had a day off since opening in September.
The micropub is open from 6:30pm to 10:30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 2pm until 11pm on Friday, 12pm to 11pm on Saturday and 12pm to 7pm on a Sunday.
