After seven years of mainline running, and seen through Biggleswade on many occasions, the Bittern worked its final charter service before a major overhaul.

Captured on camera by Alisdair Anderson, it is pictured in sub zero temperatures approaching Biggleswade on Tuesday (December 30). It was a sister-locomotive to the world-famous Mallard, and was working from Kings Cross to Lincoln. In 2014, Bittern was fitted with two commemorative plaques, similar to those worn by sister locomotives Mallard and Sir Nigel Gresley, in honour of its 90mph runs.
