East Beds Concert Band, which rehearses in Biggleswade, will be the first group of musicians to perform Kimbolton School CCF March.

The piece was written by Bedford based composer Peter Guthrie. The saxophonist and violinist previously taught at Bedford School and Kimbolton School.

Andy Kershaw, one of East Beds Concert Band’s two conductors, said: “Peter composed the march for the school wind band.

However, due to the school band having too few players it has never been played – until now!

“The march contains references to the Huntingdonshire Cycle Regiment March from the First World War, the Navy March and the RAF March.

“The whole march gives every section of instruments part of the tune.”

The concert, or wind, band features woodwind, brass and percussion instruments as well as a double bass and occasionally a harp or piano.

A range of different musical styles is played including classical, jazz, marches, pop music and show tunes. Band members often request which pieces they would like to play.

This term the band is rehearsing Skyfall, Handel in the Strand, Chorus Line and The Dam Busters March among other pieces. Some of the pieces are easier than others so that everyone has a chance to play at their own level.

East Beds Concert Band was first formed 41 years ago by musician and teacher Jim Hibbert with the aim of giving mainly younger musicians a group with which to perform.

Now rehearsals are shared between co-conductors Andy Kershaw and Liz Schofield. The group is a mixture of children and adults of all ages and abilities.

Concerts are given three times a year, at the end of each school term. Band members have also played Christmas carols outside various supermarkets other the years.

East Beds Concert Band’s next concert will be on Sunday, July 7 at Shuttleworth College. Gates will open at 1.30pm and the first notes will sound at 3pm.

This is your chance to hear Kimbolton School CCF March.
