Village’s final pub is to close

A VILLAGE’S only remaining pub is about to close.

The Crown and Cushion, which is located in West Street, Great Gransden, dates back to the 15th century but it will be closing down at the end of the month.

The pub’s landlord, Chris Clark, said that the decision has been made due to lack of business. He said: “The villagers don’t support it very much, which is a shame. I’ve been running it on and off since 1981. I was here in ‘81 til ‘94, then ‘97 to ‘05 then from September 2010 until now.

“It’s had eight landlords in the past five years which didn’t help.

“There is a core of villagers that use it extremely well but that’s not enough to keep it open. It will close down and the freehold is up for sale.”

There will be a final farewell event on Friday, September 30, after which the pub will close.

Customers can enjoy a free barbecue and live music from local group, Van Gogh’s Ear.
