Biggleswade power through to Herts Cup semis

Knebworth only turned up with four players giving Biggleswade a 1-0 head-start.

Sam Mccoy started at string one against Kevin Springham, an awkward opponent, and battled to a 3-1 win. Simon Gray, having stood down due to Knebworth turning up one short, took on the unenviable task of marking the game.

Dan Easton then played Rob Brooks and having won the first and third lost 3-2.

Paul Hunt then beat Harry Stallwood 3-0 but with some very tight games to secure the victory for Biggleswade.

Marcus Gray, on his return from a mini break after some gruelling university exams, played sublimely to beat Dennis Arthur 3-0 in the last game.

The team now play Bishops Stortford at home in the semi-final on a date to be confirmed in an attempt to get to the final and win for the third time in Biggleswade’s history.

On Monday the club fell to another loss in the Beds League – but it was a much closer affair this time.

Biggleswade made the same journey as the previous week travelling to Bedford to take on Bunyan II with an unchanged team looking to bounce back from three consecutive heavy defeats.

First up was Simon Gray at string two who went down 3-0 to Ivan once again struggling with the warm courts.

Nathan Bascom at string four faced Richard Earl, coming back from a five month injury lay-off, and despite this Richard was straight back into his stride defeating Nathan in straight games.

Rich Anthony at string three despite being behind in every game showed his tenacity and returned to winning ways defeating Mark Tentori 3-0 to bring Biggleswade back into the match.

Martin Wright at number five started slowly losing the first game to Stuart Bithrey but then turned back the clock to win the next three games to level the match at 2-2.

With Biggleswade in with a chance of victory for the first time in over a month hopes rested with number one Dan Easton who was taking on Nathan Derek. In a high quality match with many long rallies Dan couldn’t quite deliver the victory required losing 3-1 to give Bunyan victory.

Overall score: Bunyan II 3 (15) – Biggleswade 2 (7).

The next fixture sees Biggleswade’s first home game of 2016 against Flitwick.
