Brave Biggy showing despite Melton defeat

A month ago Biggleswade might well have wilted under pressure from a stronger better drilled side.

But the enthusiasm of stand in Coach Damian White and the shrewd observations of Steve Carter his right hand man are starting to have an impact. This was another performance in which the players tried their hardest to make the opposition work hard for every point which is all that one can ask from a Biggy team.

Biggleswade fielded a stronger side than in recent weeks with Michael Trigg returning at scrum-half after a lay-off through injury. He made an impact with several sniping runs before retiring from the fray again with another strain.

On another windy day Biggleswade had the advantage of the fresh wind as they kicked off. They scored first with a successful penalty from Will Simkins after several other attempts went wide in the swirling breeze. But the Melton Mowbray kicker had more luck adding the conversion to each of the five tries that the visitors scored.

It was only at the catch and drive move from a five metre lineout where the visitors were dominant. In all other phases Biggleswade were on level terms. The pack competed well at scrum and ruck several times getting a turnover. The tackle count was high with everyone doing their bit whether in open play or at close contact. Giant lock Jack Lamb was typical making crucial tackles in front of the posts when a score seemed likely.

In open play there were some spirited moves by the three-quarters. As always Michael Hall put his head down and made an inroad up the field. Will Simkins has a more silky approach and at six foot three threaded his way through some packed defence. Fellow centre Michael Kendall actually a flanker takes the more direct approach. Alex Borg playing this week on the wing had some powerful runs to take the ball deep into opposition territory.

As always the back row worked hard with young number eight James Ramsay making more of an impact in his third game at the top level. Liam Dunne and Michael Haddow carried well in attack and defended strongly.

Unfortunately Michael is soon to depart on an antipodean adventure travelling to the distant “land of the long white cloud” of New Zealand as part of a world tour.

This Saturday there is a break from league action before another trip to Leicester to take on old rivals Oadby-Wyggestonians who are fourth in the league.

The home tie was a very close 7-10 loss so hopes are high of a better result. The match kicks off at the later time of 3pm.
