Last October well over 100 players entered the Committee Cup Foursomes knockout competition in the hope of reaching the final.
The knockout rounds were played over the winter months and concluded with the 36 hole final on March 4 over the John O’Gaunt Course.
It was contested between Robert Dobson with Darren Redman, and Graham Anderson partnering Colm Moody. Teeing off at 9am the first 18 holes ended with Robert Dobson and Darren Redman in command being 3 up.
The players set off in early afternoon for the second round Anderson and Moody had it all to do but despite their effort were not able to close the gap and the final result was a win for Robert and Darren 3 & 2. The standard of play by all players was excellent.
On Sunday, March12 the Sutton Cup, a stableford competition, was played over the John O’Gaunt course. The competition is open to any member who has not won an Honours Board Competition in the previous 12 months. For many this is either the end of the 2016 or the opening of their 2017 golfing season.
In damp and occasionally rainy conditions there were 120 players who set out from 7.30am until early afternoon to secure the win. At the conclusion there were three players all on 40 points with the winner decided on count back. Ben Stephens, with a storming 24 points on the back 9 holes, secured the victory from Peter Roberts, second and third Dean Russell.
The Ladies and Seniors joined forces to play in a mixed stableford competition on the John O’Gaunt course on Thursday, March 9 where spring-like conditions and little wind made ideal golfing weather.
The 50 pairs set off with high hopes of coming in with a good or respectable score, but for many this was not the case. Making the most of the conditions were Val Cooper and her partner Vernon Toms who came in with a very respectable 43 points to take the honours and plaudits from Pauline Gauge and Malcolm Faulkner, three points back on 40 points, with Tineke Smith and Phil White in third on 39 points.
In traditional fashion the Ladies provided an array home made cakes and nibbles whilst the Seniors provided the liquid refreshments.
