Balague: Immense pride in United's draw at league leaders

Our first team may be young in years but what a mature performance they put up to hold league leaders, London Colney in their own backyard and extend our unbeaten run to 10 games. Proud doesn't begin to describe my feelings.

It was also wonderful to have my great mate, Edu Rubio the Academy head coach at Milton Keynes Dons, watching on with us as the lads battled to win a well fought point against the league’s top side. I know he was impressed with what he saw.

This involved handling the strength and physicality of London Colney side and, most pleasingly, doing so by playing our type of game.

This is clearly becoming a side that has developed a steely resolve linked with a contagious mentality and desire not to finish on the wrong side of the result, something that hasn’t happened since January 2 when we lost 1-0 at home to Leighton Town.

Since then we have amassed 24 points out of a possible 30.

What also impressed is how we coped with the absence of key players like Lee Bilcock, Matt Cooper and Nick Elliott. Congratulations especially to Valentino Quko, a product of the Elite Development Programme we have with Stevenage, just 18-years-old and making his debut in a Biggleswade United shirt.

Val will hopefully be just the first of many to emerge from the scheme and if any of those that follow him can enjoy a similar debut success then everyone – our opponents apart – will be more than happy.

He certainly hit the ground running, scoring with his first touch to put us level after just three minutes.

And as always it isn’t just about what happens on the pitch but also about the tireless efforts of those behind the scenes. As I write this I am told by our secretary, Tracey James, that one of our supporters, Steve Grenfell, is donating his time and expertise in helping us to re-decorate the clubhouse.

My gratitude knows no bounds. I have always said that people like Steve are the very essence of what makes a community club like ours. Many thanks Steve.

And finally, It was also wonderful to see a growing contingent of away supporters with as many Biggleswade fans in attendance as there were London Colney ones and we hope to see them all again on Saturday when we visit Holmer Green.
