Gamlingay lose in eight goal thriller

The match was an open affair from the off with chances being created at either end of the pitch on a regular basis. Gamlingay forced a number of early corners while the hosts struggled to find a way past Loney.

It was the hosts who opened the scoring on around the 20 minute mark when a slick passing move was finished off by Matt Hayden who hammered in off the bar from 12 yards.

However, the host’s lead was short-lived as Gamlingay were level through Davidson five minutes later. Leo Churms played the ball into the youngster 20 yards from goal and he wrong footed three defenders with two drag backs before smashing the ball into the top corner with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

The equaliser was met with a quick double from the home side as they opened up a two goal lead with ten minutes of the half remaining. The first goal came in slightly fortunate circumstances when a low free kick from the right was missed by the runner at the front post and found the far corner of Aaron Loney’s net via the left leg of James Worboys.

However, the home side’s third goal was right out of the top drawer. The ball was cut inside from the left following a quick break and the Lakenheath and James McCabe had time to set himself before giving Loney no chance with a strike into the top corner from 25 yards.

The pendulum swung again before half time as Gamlingay responded with a quick-fire double from Conor Smith. The first came as Leo Churms saw his effort from the edge of the box blocked by a Lakenheath defender only for the ball to loop over to Smith at the back post and he was able to finish from close range.

Smith’s second came with a slice of luck, arguably deserved, after the winger did done well to win the ball and hold off a man before seeing his strike from the edge of the box catch a defender and loop over the keeper.

After the goal fest that was the first half, the second half was a slightly tighter affair with neither side really wanting to give anything away.

It wasn’t until the 70th minute that the game saw its seventh goal as Dominic Ascroft- Walker brought down Luke Catchpole and the forward dusted himself off to beat Loney, who got his hand to the ball, with a very well struck penalty.

The scoring was completed with 10 minutes remaining when the hosts broke down the right and the ball eventually found its way to Hayden who had the simple task of slotting home from 6 yards.

Man of the match was awarded to Aaron Loney who, despite the score line, made a string of fine saves throughout the game to keep Gamlingay in it.

This weekend sees Gamlingay travel to struggling Cottenham United in the Premier. Kick-off is at 2pm.
