Guillem Balague: bad times, and we need to turn it around

A 2-0 defeat at Wembley on Tuesday night means that so far this season we have amassed five points out of a possible 36. That by anybody’s reckoning is not good enough.

These, as they say, are the bad times and we need to turn things around – and sooner rather than later.

I have yet to find out the full story, but my understanding is that work commitments meant that some of our players were unable to make the trek to Wembley in time for kick off, leaving us light in both numbers and, probably even more importantly, in experience.

Now all of us at the club need to address the situation and concentrate on getting enough points in the bank that will see us climb out of the relegation zon.

I know that we can, and that we will do it, and our immediate focus will now be on making sure that not too much daylight starts to appear between us and the other sides above us in the league table.

We are basically a young side and the absence of some crucially experienced players has frequently exposed the limitations of some of our youngsters, who despite showing great potential are still nonetheless a work in progress.

They will get there, I am convinced, but at Wembley, without the settling influence and calming approach of some experienced heads – we are still missing around 11 regular players – we fell short.

I still fully believe that we are too good to be relegated, but am also equally aware of the fact that the history of football at all levels is littered with clubs that were ‘too good’ to go down, and then did precisely that.

On the plus side we are through to the next round of the FA Vase after a hard fought victory over United Counties League opponents, Cogenhoe United and now look forward to welcoming Eastern Counties league opponents, Saffron Walden in the next round.

Also, this weekend from noon at Second Meadow before our game with Cockfosters, as part of the ‘day-job’, I will be signing copies of my latest book which is the biography of the former Manchester United and Real Madrid legend and superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Please come and support us; believe you me, it does make a difference. See you there.
