Hale Leys finish the season with a bang

The Aylesbury outfit failed to complete the treble last Tuesday when they were beaten 3-2 by Kent Athletic in the South Midlands Division Two League Cup, but Saturday’s win over Brimsdown confirmed Hale’s dominance in the league as they finished the season 12 points clear of Kent at the top of the table.

With first team regulars Daniel Parsons, Tom Brindley and Unas Ilyas all out due to injury, a number of United’s other squad members had the chance to impress when they travelled to bottom of the table Brimsdown at the weekend.

However, Hale’s hopes of ending the season on a high took an early blow when the home side went ahead inside 11 minutes, much to the surprise of the visitors, but this only brought the champions to life as Mark Tattam quickly equalised with a 30-yard curler into the top corner.

Hale then took control and they went into half-time with a 2-1 lead after Alex Woodfine was on hand to score and edge out team-mate Tom Brindley at the top of the goalscoring charts in Division Two.

The second half would see Leys take complete control as they attacked from the off with Woodfine netting his second to secure the top scorer award, before goalkeeper Ashley Jenkins came out on pitch and headed in a Steve Garbutt corner to put the visitors in command at 4-1.

Roni Joe bagged Hale’s fifth just after the hour-mark, which was shortly followed by a sixth goal when Garbutt got forward for Steven Wilson to smash in from close-range, and that’s how it remained until full-time to complete a fine season in resounding fashion.

Manager Paul Alleyne said afterwards: “We were lucky today that we recovered. Brimsdown showed heart and determination, which we were able to overcome to get the win. I’m happy with the result but we could have 
done better on the day.”

Hale Leys United owner, Kumar Hamid, added: “I was impressed with what I saw.

“We do have some developing players in the team and I think next season we will see more from them. Credit to the team, they still fought hard and got the points and it’s a great end to a great season.”
