Langford dump Hatfield out of Trophy

Langford progressed to the third round of the SSML Challenge Trophy with a 2-1 win at Hatfield Town on Tuesday.

Both sides started brightly trying to play football, each team making and failing to take one good goalscoring opportunity.

Langford gradually started to gain more of the possession and got their passing game going. Matt Kenneford passed to Sean Murray who volleyed on the turn into the keeper’s arms. Nathan Mallett made one of his signature runs, bursting through the Hatfield defence, his shot being deflected wide by a last ditch defensive block.

Then followed a long period of midfield play with Langford just having the edge in possession; however neither team were able to threaten their opponent’s goal, other than a Stephen Brooks shot deflected over the Hatfield bar.

Then in the 42nd minute poor defending presented Matt Kenneford with the ball at his feet in the Hatfield penalty area, he made no mistake from close range putting Langford ahead.

Hatfield started the second half with good possession resulting in Callum Wickham shooting high over the goal. Then followed a period of Langford in control, but in the 65th minute, Hatfield broke away down their right wing, and the cross fell to George Florence who drilled home the equaliser.

Langford responded and pushed forward, and under pressure Ryan Pearman in the Hatfield goal could only push the ball out onto the feet of David Tembua who calmly rounded a defender and rolled the ball into the empty net for the winner.

Another run by Nathan Mallett saw him ghost past two defenders before shooting over the bar. Hatfield piled on the pressure throwing caution to the wind looking for the equaliser, but Langford’s defence held firm.

Langford’s next match is away to Risborough Rangers in SSML Division 1 on Saturday, October 31.

The Reserves’ next match is away at Meltis Albion in The Beds Intermediate Cup on October 31, 2.30pm kick-off.
