Sandy Ladies’ first home match on their new pitch at Sandy Upper School ended in a third defeat in a row, 2-1 against Sherrardswood Ladies.

Sandy were reduced to a squad of just 13 through injuries, illness and work. But the girls worked incredibly hard and great credit to several of them who played out of position , especially to Pearl who played at full back, centre back, on the wing and up front during the 90 minutes – a terrific effort.

The match was end to end with the defence working really hard, in particular Lucy who played her first match for the Ladies at centre back and performed really well throughout the match, but also Kirsty, Karen, Pearl Chloe and Sophie who interchanged throughout the match, partly because of injuries sustained during the match itself. Amie was solid in goal and her usual pro-active self giving the defence verbal assistance and making herself available for back passes when necessary as well as making a number of good saves.

Claire on the right wing and Faye on the left worked incredibly hard. Kayleigh and Jenny in midfield had a really tough match against a powerful Sherrardswood midfield whist Katie and Amber made strong, fast runs up front and supported each other well but the keeper had a good match and made a couple of really good saves.

There were no goals in the first half and it took until the 65th minute before Sherrardswood broke the deadlock with a good goal that gave Amie little chance.

The visitors were then forced back for the next 20 minutes as Sandy pressed for an equalizer but it took a cracking effort from Faye to level the scores on 84 minutes following a great pass from Kayleigh to put her through.

Unfortunately Sandy conceded a free kick on the edge of the box in extra time and, with literally the last kick of the match, snatched all three points with a shot into the top right hand corner that gave Amie no chance whatsoever.

Despite the disappointment of losing the team should take great pride in their performance – player of the match was Lucy Saunders for her terrific display at centre back.

Sandy are at home to Houghton Athletic in the Leageu Cup on Sunday and they are top of Division Two with three wins out of three so a tough match – 2pm kick off at Sandy Upper School.

Sandy: Amie Fage, Kirsty Fylling (Sophie Webb), Pearl Houghton, Lucy Saunders, Karen Varley (Chloe Reeves) Claire Ashwell, Kayleigh Bennett, Jenny Holt, Faye Prout, Katie Seldon, Amber Williams.
