Langford held on to record a much deserved 3-2 victory at Brimsdown in the SSML Division One on Saturday.
Langford were able to field a strong side, welcoming back Ben Stocker and Luke Nicholl in the centre of defence, and it showed.
The Reds immediately pushed forward showing their intention to play good football. Nathan Mallett made a run down the right flank and crossed to Sean Murray who shot over the bar. Brimsdown looked to play a longer ball to their speedy forwards, but Ben Stocker and Luke Nicholl were equal to all that came their way.
Neither team settled and although play was from end to end, no goal chances were created. Then Langford’s passing and movement began to tell, Brimsdown hardly getting any possession, and being restricted to long balls.
Mallett, Stephen Brooks, and Murray seemed to be involved in every move, with Mallett twice, and Brooks testing the Brimsdown keeper. Ryan Nicholl in central midfield was running the Langford possession, making himself available, then creating good forward moves.
In the 40th minute the pressure paid off. George McMillan collected the ball and passed to Nicholl who moved it out to Mallett, setting up his run and cross, for Brooks to shoot inside the post.
Brimsdown rallied and forced a succession of corners but could not fashion a shot or header on goal.
The hosts mounted an attack from the restart, with a three man move ending with Hurde shooting over the bar. Langford were again playing good passing football, got Mallett through one on one with the keeper, who saved with his feet. From the resulting corner Luke Nicholl headed just wide of the near post.
Brimsdown fought back and forced a number of free kicks and corners with Hatch looking to take advantage of the kicks, but having his efforts saved by Jaward in the Langford goal.
The Reds continued to play their passing game and in the 67th minute Kenneford flicked the ball to Murray who was 35 yards out with his back to the goal; he turned and volleyed the ball over the keeper into the top corner of the net.
At this point it was all Langford and on 75 minutes the pressure told. Pickering in the Brimsdown goal dropped a cross; the ball fell to the feet of Mallett who rifled it home through a sea of leg.
Three minutes later a long clearance fell to Gabriel who shot and pulled a goal back for Brimsdown.
Then in added time, Cato-Tyson found himself in space and shot from distance to score Brimsdown’s second.
Langford’s next match is away to Risborough Rangers in SSMFL Division 1 on Saturday. The Reserves’ next match is at Meltis Albion in The Beds Intermediate Cup on Saturday at 2pm.
