Potton’s return to FA Cup football for the first time in five years ended in a 2-0 defeat on Saturday.
United came up against Step 5 side Bedfont Sports in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie at The Hollow.
The youthful Bedfont Sports side, of the Cherry Red Combined Counties Football League, played some quick attacking football and Potton’s lack of match fitness in the first half, this being their first competitive game of the season, showed although in the second half they competed much better.
But a goal in each half saw Bedfont through to the next round.
Bedfont started brightly and a last minute tackle by Calum Forster denied Malachi Thomas a scoring chance. Gary Ansell-Carter was put through but 16 year old Connagh Wilks prevented a shooting chance. Thomas was proving a handful and a good passing move saw Aden Roberts shoot wide of the post when well placed. Roberts then saw a shot cleared off the line and Wilks headed narrowly wide from a corner. It was in the 15th minute that Potton had their first attempt on goal when Nick Finney’s effort went just wide of the post.
Gary Ansell-Carter shot over the bar before Joe Jordan saw his shot saved by keeper Josh Richardson. Craig Lewis saved well from a header from Darryl Sinden and then a shot by Sinden.
In the 27th minute Justin Koeres headed goalwards from a corner and with Lewis making a desperate effort to save the Referees Assistant ruled it had gone over the line to give Bedfont the lead. Koeres had a 25 yard shot pushed over the bar by Lewis before Finney had another shot blocked.
Lewis kept Potton in the game with a good save from Adam Roberts after the Potton defence had failed to clear the ball.
In the second half after a good passing move with George Kiely Gary Ansell-Carter shot just over the bar. From a corner there was a goalmouth scramble and the referee adjudged a Potton push on the keeper.
Joe Jordan delayed his shot and the ball ran to Mark Ansell-Carter who saw his shot saved.
In the 59th minute Bedfont increased their lead when substitute Esmund Jones was put through and he calmly placed his shot past Lewis. Nick Finney headed wide, then had a long shot go over the bar and then headed wide. Potton brought on their substitutes and they started pressing the ball upfield although the Bedfont defence looked very composed.
A cross from Jamie Berryman went just wide before at the other end a good passing movement saw Callum O’Reilly shoot just wide of the post for Bedfont. Calum Forster had a 25 yard free kick that just went over the bar.
A good crowd of 91 saw a match played in very good spirit with Bedfont Sports deserving their win. However there were some encouraging signs for Potton once all players are available.
The committee of Bedfont were very friendly and appreciative of the playing surface at Potton. At the end of the match the Bedfont Secretary asked for a brush to clean their changing room as it is customary for them to do so!
